Today's first class was on Photoshop layers. I own a copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements 12, but as I went through the Photoshop class, I saw that my software, although I paid around $100 for it, has many features purposely removed from it by Adobe, in order to create demand for its professional version of the Photoshop software. I spent some time trying to follow along the course with my version of Photoshop, but most of what the instructor was going over, I could not follow along with on my version. So, I downloaded the 30 day free trial of Photoshop and Illustrator, and I was then able to follow along with the instructor much better.
I learned about masks, a Photoshop feature. Applying black or grey tones to a mask will hide or protect parts of the image, and white will revel parts of the image. We will be going over pixel/layer masks (resolution dependent bitmap images edited with the painting or selection tools) and vector masks (resolution independent, created with a pen or shape tool).
When the layer mask is selected, an overlay used in traditional masking called a rubylith can be activated by hitting the backslash button on our keyboard (\). The refine edge tool will help improve the quality of the edges in a layer mask.
